A simple guy, according to the old story, was once told the difference between prose and poetry. “My God,” he responded, “I’ve been speaking prose my whole life!”
I feel like that guy now that our Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, has established the fact that Times New Roman is the font of the established order: “My God, I’ve been speaking Times New Roman my whole life!”
I was gratified to come to this realization when I recently read about Rubio’s advocacy of Times New Roman on the grounds that the Biden-era move to the sans serif typeface was part of a liberal effort to champion the world of woke. This is from the NY Times report, here in Calibri:
While mostly framed as a matter of clarity and formality in presentation, Mr. Rubio’s directive to all diplomatic posts around the world blamed “radical” diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility programs for what he said was a misguided and ineffective switch from the serif typeface Times New Roman to sans serif Calibri in official department paperwork.
In an ‘Action Request’ memo obtained by The New York Times, Mr. Rubio said that switching back to the use of Times New Roman would “restore decorum and professionalism to the department’s written work.” Calibri is “informal” when compared to serif typefaces like Times New Roman, the order said, and “clashes” with the department’s official letterhead.
Calibri, then? Perish the thought. I salute the Secretary of State’s prophetic pronouncement. Times New Roman obviously has the ring of one-hundred per cent Trumpian truth, so that’s what I’m going to keep speaking.
