ICE On The Streets: Words From A Friend In the Twin Cities*

We have anti-ICE signs in our windows:  “ICE OUT OF MN” and also “BE THE SALT – MELT ICE INTO THE GUTTER.”  Two days ago an ICE vehicle stopped and took photos of the houses on our street that have anti-ICE signs like ours.  We neighbors assume we are being added, at least our addresses, to Trump’s list of “domestic terrorists.”

These are their words, amazingly.  When ICE agents take photos at demonstrations and are asked why they are doing that they frequently say:  “So we can add all of you to our list of domestic terrorists.”  These are blatant scare-tactics, but they aren’t working for ICE, despite their widespread use. In our case we couldn’t get outside fast enough to confront the ICE agent taking photos, with three more of his buddies sitting in their big black SUV.

True, if we were the only ones being targeted it might be scary.  But there is a palpable sense of solidarity in the Twin Cities as so many people take action to obstruct, slow down, stop, witness, honk our horns, blow our whistles that we carry around our neck whenever we go out, video and take other steps in response to the ICE violence and threat. And even very moderate folks are angry that ICE arrested and detained a 5 year old and a 2 year old over the past two or three days. The picture of the little boy wearing a bunny hat being led by a big ICE agent to the black ICE SUV has gone viral.

Now more and more of us have signs in our yards saying:   NUREMBERG 2026!  WE HAVE YOUR NAMES!
